CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder)

CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention - Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder) is a volunteer-driven non-profit organization that supports people with AD/HD. Founded in in Florida in 1987, CHADD was put together by a group of parents of children with AD/HD and a couple of psychologists; the parents felt that there was a need for education, support and advocacy on behalf of the AD/HD community. And so they started CHADD.

Having a child diagnosed with a disability or being diagnosed yourself can be an overwhelming and isolating experience. Information is key in understanding your or your child's issues. Navigating the best path for you or your child can be bewildering and frustrating. CHADD provides the knowledge and support you need to in order for you or your child to work up to your full potentional. Through CHADD, a clearinghouse of information on AD/HD is avalable to help you make sense of the subject. CHADD also supports research on AD/HD, furthering the information base on the subject. CHADD's database can also be accessed by professionals and educators.

Support is of equal importance as information. CHADD can hook you up with a support group for you and your family. Guidance from someone who stands in your shoes can be an invaluable resource. Dealing with school districts on behalf of your child can be confusing. Contacting other parents of children with AD/HD can help the process be more managable.

Information on AD/HD is also available on the internet and in books. NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health) also has a few webpages devoted to AD/HD as well as some publications that can be requested. CHADD is one of a smaller number of organizations dedicated to serving the AD/HD community. There are, in total, 235 chapters in 43 states and Pureto Rico run by volunteers (usually mothers of school-age children with AD/HD). CHADD provides a valuable service for the AD/HD community.
