Treatment Of ADHD In Adults

What Are Some Of The Various Methods Of Treatment And Care Of ADHD In Adults?

ADHD is a condition in which a person has difficulty with attentiveness. The patient is usually very hyper and excitable and extremely impulsive as well. It is usually a behavioral problem that is diagnosed during childhood. The cause is unknown but may be linked to family genetics. It has been proven that this disorder begins to develop in the brain at an early age. Images of the brains of people with ADHD have been significantly different than the brains of normally functioning adults. People with ADHD may also have additional disorders such as bipolar disorder or depression. There are several different courses of treatment of ADHD in adults.

One way to treat it is with medications. Patients are usually given psychostimulant drugs which have a calming effect on the psyche. By slowing down the brain activity the patient will ideally calm down enough to cease the hyperactivity. Some examples of psychostimulants are Adderall, Focalin, Dexedrine, Vyvanse, and Ritalin. There is also a non stimulant drug called Strattera that is also used for treatment of ADHD in adults. Several different medications may have to be tried before the right one is found. Unfortunately everyone's brain chemistry is not the same so what works for one person may not work for another.

Another route that may be taken in treatment of ADHD in adults is behavioral therapy. Behavioral therapy is done with a psychologist or therapist. It involves learning coping skills so that an adult suffering from ADHD can learn how to control the feelings associated with ADHD. If the patient can learn to recognize the feelings that come before a hyperactive or depressive episode then he or she may be able to learn how to control the actions. That is the logic of behavioral therapy. ADHD is a chronic condition. It can not be completely cured but with the proper care it can be managed significantly.
